Awarded Best Male Vocalist and Best Song at the 2008 International Reggae and World Music Awards, Tarrus Riley is the most promising of the second generation of Jamaica roots reggae singers. With an August 4, 2009 release of his much-anticipated third set CONTAGIOUS on Cannon Productions, distributed by VP Records, Tarrus Riley reaffirms that he is one of finest singer/songwriters of his generation, irrespective of musical genre. The son of Jimmy Riley - who has had a long career as a solo artist as well as being a former member of the Uniques and the Techniques. Riley's songs retain ties to the Jamaican roots tradition while still managing to sound distinctly contemporary. In addition, his strong stage presence gives him crossover appeal and marks him as a coming force on the international reggae scene.

The album is grounded in a roots reggae tradition that is recast with a gleaming 21st century sheen courtesy of the album’s primary producer, venerable saxophonist Dean Fraser and created by Grafton and Tuff Gong studios sovereignty including Sly and Robbie on drum and bass, guitarists Mitchum “Khan” Chin and Cat Coore, keyboardist Robbie Lyn and Dean Fraser’s impassioned sax styling.Contagious remarkably shifts between smoothly crooned lover’s rock and artful Rastafarian declarations, provocative commentaries and dancehall’s combustible edge, its cohesion provided by Tarrus’s spectacularly emotive vocals and reliably inspiring words. As its title indicates, this highly infectious collection of 19 songs is characterized by symptoms of melodiousness, rapturous roots rhythms and hard hitting lyrical realities that are transmitted through repeated spins, resulting in a high grade musical fever from which you will not want to recover. “The reason why I called it ‘Contagious’ is because I would love for everyone to catch it,” says Tarrus. “I don’t want my music to have boundaries of race, age, nationality or religion; I represent reggae, live music, and I want everyone to catch on to its positive, good vibes.”

Standout tracks are easily spread throughout Contagious. Tarrus returns to the rapid-fire deejaying of his Taurus days on “Good Girl Gone Bad” (featuring rising dancehall star Konshens) produced by Tarik “Russian” Johnston. On “Don’t Judge”, Tarrus cautions harsh judgments often times leads to reckless actions. Random brutality, war and an array of social injustices prompts the contemplative “Why So Much Wickedness?”. A simple yet stirring invocation to His Majesty is expressed on “King Selassie” and the title track “Contagious” reworks the majestic one-drop rhythm from Bob Marley’s immortal “Coming in From the Cold” as it details that untreatable sweet sickness.

Tarrus forthrightly addresses the wicked act of violence against women in “Start A New” (produced by Shane Brown), urging the song’s female protagonist to leave her abusive man. As a means of calling greater attention to this malady, Tarrus has established a non-funded, anti domestic violence campaign, Start A New in which he, Blak Soil, Majah , the Area Yutes Foundation, Miss Jamaica 2007 Yendi Phillips and an assortment of artists regularly visit schools and speak to children from some of the island’s most troubled communities about the violence which many of them are exposed each day. “We put on plays, perform and talk to the kids about things that touch their lives and violence is a part of that,” he explains, “and they really appreciate that we would take the time to do that.”

Like his father, Tarrus has a sweet, nuanced tenor vocal style, he taught himself to play keyboards and several percussion instruments and began writing his own songs, many of which had strong Rastafarian and consciousness-leaning themes. His 2004 debut album Challenges was an impressive introduction to the Jamaican market deserving of a much wider audience. His sophomore effort Parables featured the most popular reggae song of 2007 “She’s Royal”, won critical praise throughout the Caribbean Diaspora and almost single handedly heralded a roots reggae renaissance.
Continuing the celebration of Motown’s 50th anniversary, fans will decide which 50 songs from the classic Motown catalog will be heard on a forthcoming two-CD “fanthology.” The selections on Motown 50 Fanthology (Motown/UMe), to be released September 1, 2009, will be chosen by fans voting for their favorites on a special Website, classic.motown.com/vote . Voting begins immediately and will conclude July 15. The songs will be arranged on the CDs from 1 to 50, with #1 being the track with the most votes.

On the site, fans may choose their five most beloved songs from a list of more than 100 of Motown’s greatest recordings, from the label’s first major hit, 1960’s “Money (That’s What I Want)” by Barrett Strong, through Boyz II Men’s Motown–retro smash “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye To Yesterday”, with such classics as Smokey Robinson & the Miracles’ “The Tears Of A Clown”, the Supremes’ “Stop! In The Name Of Love”, the Temptations’ “My Girl”, Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”, and Rick James’ “Super Freak” in between. One song is even offered in two versions: “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye and by Gladys Knight & The Pips. More than 40 artists are represented, including besides those already mentioned Diana Ross, Four Tops, the Jackson 5, the Commodores, Mary Wells, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, the Marvelettes and Lionel Richie.

In 2008, fans in the U.K. and internationally voted for their favorites, which were heard on their best-selling (approaching 700,000 sales) editions of Motown 50. The top three? Gaye’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas’ “Dancing In The Street” and the Supremes’ “Baby Love”. The chart-topping Motown 50 has gone Platinum, Gold, or Silver in 8 European Countries. The successful compilation reached Top Ten in 13 countries, including Denmark, the U.K., Finland, Norway, and Sweden, where it was number 1. Fans not only picked up physical copies, but Motown 50 also scored Top Ten spots on the Digital Chart in numerous countries as well.

For Motown 50 Fanthology, U.S. fans will be able to vote only once. The first 50 voters will receive a credit on the album and the first 500 voters will receive an “I Voted! Motown 50” collector’s edition bumper sticker. All voters will be entered in a random drawing for a grand prize—a trip for two to Hitsville, U.S.A., the original Detroit home of Motown, including flight, hotel, admission to the Motown Museum, and tickets to a forthcoming Motown gala event. The winner will be announced on August 17.

In addition, UMe/Motown has partnered with the People’s Choice Awards to offer fans the opportunity to vote for their favorite Motown artist of all time. Voting in this exclusive category will take place on the official People’s Choice Awards website, www.pcaVOTE.com, from June 24 until July 15. The winner, as voted on by the fans, will be featured in the upcoming “fanthology” album and recognized during the 36th Annual People’s Choice Awards in 2010. By voting in this special category on ww.pcaVOTE.com, voters have another chance to compete for the grand prize.

As an irresistible force of social and cultural change, Berry Gordy’s legendary Motown Records made its mark not just on the music industry but society at large, with a sound that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century. No other record company in history has exerted such an enormous influence on both the style and substance of popular music and culture. That influence is still being felt today, from pop to hip-hop, as Motown celebrates the 50th anniversary of the company’s founding.
Today, Motown is part of the Universal Music Group, with its classic recorded music catalog managed by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe).

It’s not every day a musical genius is born. On July 14, 2009, KRIZZ KALIKO will release his second solo CD, GENIUS. Along for KRIZZ KALIKO’s aurally eclectic rollercoaster ride are E-40, Kutt Calhoun, Big Scoob and, Strange’s flagship artist, Tech N9ne. Powered by a fusion of funk, rap, rock, R&B and opera – a self-made style KRIZZ KALIKO calls “Funkra” – GENIUS covers the entire spectrum of genres, from the slow and seductive “Get Off” with Tech N9ne and the rock-flavored “The Chemical” to the street anthem “Back Pack” and the album’s crossover single, “Misunderstood.”

“There are only a few guys to come along in music every so often that I think are geniuses,” KRIZZ KALIKO declares. “You got Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Kanye, T-Pain, Tech N9ne. I think those dudes are geniuses. I want people to think that same thing about me.”

Ambitious? Yes. But after working with Tech N9ne and Strange Music for 10 years, performing over 200 shows a year, KRIZZ KALIKO has earned the right to claim that title. His solo debut, 2008’s Vitiligo, landed at No. 19 on the Billboard charts and he has been instrumental in Tech N9ne’s incredible success: In 2008, Tech N9ne SoundScanned over one million units, making him the most successful independent Hip Hop artist in history.

KRIZZ KALIKO is the sonic “glue” of Strange Music. “I’m Tech’s right hand man in writing,” he says. “It’s a weird, beautiful chemistry. The yin and the yang. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.”

Catch KRIZZ KALIKO with Tech N9ne and Kutt Kalhoun on the Rock the Bells 2009 Tour starting June 2.
