TWO POWERFUL ONE-ACT PLAYS ABOUT
BASEBALL LEGENDS SATCHEL PAIGE & JOSH GIBSON AT ABRONS ART CENTER
JANUARY 31 - FEBRUARY 24, 2008
New York, NY - January 25, 2007 -- Saluting the Negro Baseball League for Black History Month 2008, New Federal Theatre and Castillo Theatre present two remarkable one-act plays: "Satchel: A Requiem For Racism," and "Josh: The Black Babe Ruth." |
|
Written by Fred Newman, "Satchel: A Requiem For Racism," tells the story about Leroy Satchel Paige in his 80s; a baseball Hall of Famer and 50-year veteran ace pitcher in the Negro Leagues and the finally integrated Major Leagues, who looked forward to possibly pitching again.
"Josh: The Black Babe Ruth," penned by Michael Jones, centers on Negro League legend Josh Gibson, whom some say died of a broken heart. Along with his good friend and fellow Negro League baseball record breaker Satchel Paige, Gibson is determined to make it into the "big Leagues" and show the world he can rival baseball greats such as Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio.
Playing at Abrons Arts Center / Recital Hall (466 Grand Street - Manhattan), from Thursday, January 31 through Sunday, February 24, 2007, "Satchel" and "Josh" marks the first collaboration between New Federal Theatre and Castillo Theatre (two of New York's most admired, respected and influential theatrical entities), and their veteran artistic leaders Woodie King, Jr. and Fred Newman.
The stellar cast of these impressive one-act plays are *Henry Afro-Bradley, *Michael Alcide, *R. Ashley Bowles (Cowboy), *Gerard Catus, *Maryam Myika Day, *Casandra Niambi Steele, *Melissa Maxwell, *Marcus Naylor, and *Toni Seawright.
Directed by Eric Coleman, the impressive production's Set Designer is Michelle Fields, Stage Manager, *Bayo Assistant Stage Manager: Mutiyat Ade-Salu, Costume Designer, Carolyn Adams, Casting by Laurence Evans, Sound Designer, Sean O'Halloran, and Lighting Designer, Antoinette Tynes.
"Satchel: A Requiem For Racism" and "Josh: The Black Babe Ruth" inform and theatrically tackle the racial prejudice of baseball's segregation era, and the pride and barrier breaking passion for the game and life both Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige shared.
Celebrate Black History Month by making plans with family and friends to see and support African-American theatre at its entertaining as well as historically relevant best.
