For the most romantic day of the year, the world famous Apollo Theater will undoubtedly be the most romantic place to be as the theater hosts Jazz music’s sensation Ms. Dianne Reeves - for a very special Valentine’s Day concert. Presented by the Apollo ‘s Art & Soul Performing Arts Series, this evening of new and old standards will place Ms. Reeves right where she belongs—in the pantheon of Apollo Theater greats. Thursday, February, 14th at 8pm. Considered contemporary Jazz music’s top artist, Dianne Reeves possesses, without question, one of the finest voices in Jazz—simultaneously powerful, intimate and full of emotion, squeezing every ounce of passion out of every song. In addition to being the perfect artist for a Valentine’s Day concert, Ms. Reeves’ Apollo engagement is also special because the talented singer will give the audience a sneak preview of a few of the songs from her new album When You Know (her first album in six years featuring new compositions), slated for release in April, 2008. The new album represents an exploration of aspects of love and Ms. Reeves plans to give the audience some insight between tunes about how the songs both inspired and touched her---and nudged her into these songs of love.
Multiple Grammy winner Dianne Reeves is recognized as one of the most significant singers of the current jazz era. While her singing is steeped in tradition, her rhythmic virtuosity and improvisational ease are breathtaking. As a result of her virtuosity, improvisational prowess and unique R&B and jazz stylings, Ms. Reeves was awarded the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for her three consecutive recordings—a Grammy first in any vocal category.
Ms. Reeves has recorded and performed extensively with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. She has also recorded with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was a featured soloist with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic.
In late 2002, Ms. Reeves worked with legendary producer Arif Mardin (Norah Jones, Aretha Franklin) on the Grammy winning A Little Moonlight, an intimate collection of ten standards featuring her touring trio. In 2004, she released her first holiday recording, Christmas Time, which was heralded by the New York Times, “one of the best jazz Christmas CD's.”
Ms. Reeves was the first singer to ever perform at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and was appointed as the first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
In 2006, Dianne Reeves appeared and performed in George Clooney's critically acclaimed "Good Night, and Good Luck," the Academy Award nominated film that chronicles Edward R. Murrow's confrontation with Senator Joseph McCarthy. The soundtrack recording of "Good Night, and Good Luck" provided Ms. Reeves with her fourth Best Jazz Vocal Grammy in 2006. In 2007, Reeves was featured in a documentary on the remarkable and all-too-brief life of Billy Strayhorn.
