Whatever Happened To.....?
OK, maybe I have my mojo back! Trying to get those creative juices back on track so here is the latest Whatever Happened To.....?
1. Heavy D- This man can’t be called Heavy D any more! This man looks great as it looks like I am bigger than him now. I do know Hev is on the West Coast now, but after seeing him in some TV shows, the ‘Bum-Dittlely-Dee’ hasn’t been seen in the Hip-Hop circle (Not that that is a bad thing nowadays!).
2. Father MC- This Uptown Records emcee was wooing the ladies in a similar fashion to the original Dark Gable, Big Daddy Kane. He ‘treated them like they wanted to be treated’ with the likes of Jodeci but hasn’t been spotted since. For some who have blurry visions, he is a dead ringer for The Wire’s Omar Little character (Michael Williams). Those who watch The Wire HAVE to agree with this assessment!
3. Young MC- Young MC entered the Hip-Hop arena with his own single called, ‘Bust A Move’ as well as being known for ghostwriting (They called it co-writing at that time) Tone Loc’s 2 biggest singles, ‘Wild Thing’ and ‘Funky Cold Medina’. He is a Grammy winner who was originally from New York but got his claim in California!
4. Positive K- This First Priority Records label emcee scored a hit with ‘I Got A Man’ and his duet with MC Lyte, ‘I’m Not Havin’ It’ created a short-lived buzz with Grand Puba’s best friend.
5. Blu Cantrell- This cute singer, whose one hit, “Hit ‘Em up Style’, had her destined to be a force in the industry when she was also nominated for a Grammy, just disappeared. No longer on J Records, it was reported she posed nude before she was a singer and I am still looking for the photos.
6. The Bravehearts- Many would ask why would anyone care or the majority would say who are The Bravehearts? Well, they are victims of the one hit wonder machine with ‘Oochie Wally’, which spawned a gold record. But most would agree it’s because of the big name that was on it, Queensbridge’s own, Nasir Jones AKA Nas.
7. Christopher Williams- Extremely hot during the hey days of the light skinned phase, this ‘New Jack City’ singer hasn’t been heard on the radio, save for his classic hits, ‘I’m Dreamin’, “Talk To Myself’ and ‘Promises, Promises’. Maybe because he was talking to himself, he dreamed about the promises he made!
8. Erykah Badu- Now this soulful eclectic vocalist can be credited with the ‘neo-soul’ movement right alongside D’Angelo, but should be credited with turning the careers and lifestyles of two very prominent rappers turned actors, Dre 3000 and Common. It’s been documented that both hip hop artists were ‘normal’ before being enclaved (yes, I made that up) and both have seen their budding acting careers and fashion sense elevated after being involved with her.
9. D’Angelo- Last spotted in a mug shot that closely resembled deceased rapper, Old Dirty Bastard, this singer who practically recorded his most infamous video naked (I am quite sure his female fans don’t want to see him if he still looks like a bloated OD
hasn’t been seen or heard. Has been rumored to have an album coming out.
10. Ma$e- Um, wasn’t he supposed to be back by now? Doesn’t it seem that artists that were stuck elsewhere who signed to G-Unit, always seem to get stuck back to where they were pre-G-Unit? (M.O.P., Mobb Deep, Olivia).
