"Dawson's Intricate, Imaginative Performance Equals Those of Robert De Niro in 'Taxi Driver' and Hillary Swank in 'Boys Don't Cry'…Essential to See! – The New York Times Available from City Lights Home Entertainment

Jan. 9th 2007 In spring, 2007, star Rosario Dawson knocked Tribeca Film Festival audiences into the backs of their seats when the acclaimed actress appeared in her producorial debut, "Descent," portraying the most controversial character of her career: a promising college student who becomes bent on seeking revenge on the classmate who raped her. City Lights Home Entertainment is releasing this explosively powerful film on DVD on February 5, 2008.

Following its Tribeca world premiere, "Descent" generated forceful and provocative press. Writing for The New York Times under the headline "Rape is Power," critic Matt Zoller Seitz said that actress Dawson, "...makes this vividly clear, dramatizing the experience and the psychological aftermath of rape with a vividness I've never seen in an American film... sitting on a mother lode of rage that will be unleashed in the film's finale, a prolonged retaliatory assault in which Maya transforms her pain into sadistic pleasure..." Zoller Seitz went on to compare Dawson's performance to those of Robert De Niro in "Taxi Driver" and Hilary Swank in "Boys Don't Cry," commenting that she "...expresses them through eddies of sadness and rage that we can sense, even though they remain hidden from other characters." Zoller Seitz concluded his review with the following appraisal: "Astonishingly, though, the film's brutality never plays like a stunt, thanks to Ms. Dawson's revelatory performance and Ms. Lugacy's adventurous direction...Hard to watch but essential to see, 'Descent' is at once realistic and rhetorical, and driven throughout by righteous anger that comes from an honest place."

"Descent" was the feature debut of director-co-writer producer Talia Lugacy; it represents the culmination of a unique creative collaboration between her and lead actress-producer Dawson, one that began when both were students at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.
